Dear Parents,

With the school year quickly approaching, I want to take this opportunity to say “Hello” and welcome you to the Eastern Point Day School Pre-K/Kindergarten Program.  Over the past few weeks, I have started preparations for the school year, and I cannot begin to express the excitement and joy I feel about our first days of school together.  We have a wonderful year in store for us all and I hope the children are looking forward to being at school and sharing in the fun. I am also enclosing my cell phone number for you to have.  If there is ever a time you feel you need to speak with me, please do not hesitate to call.  Being a parent myself, there have been many times that a question I have had could have been answered with a simple phone call.  Always feel free to speak with me at any time during school or to contact me at home.

There are a few essential items I am asking the children to bring with them on their first day.  A backpack big enough to carry snack/lunch and papers/projects for home is necessary for “hands free” walking at dismissal time.  A lunch bag or lunch box for snacks and lunch, clearly marked with your child’s name inside is also a necessity.  I will be providing a folder for each child to bring notices and information home in each day.  Please be sure to check your child’s backpack daily and return the folder every day he attends school.   I am also attaching a brief school supplies list.  None of these items have to be labeled and may be brought to school anytime during your child’s first week of classes.

We will be having snack every morning between 10:00 and 11:00.  Please have your children choose something nutritious to eat and also bring a drink, (juice boxes are great!).  If your child enjoys yogurt, please try to avoid “Gogurts” or any kind of squeeze yogurt.  Yogurt in a container to be eaten with a spoon is fine.  Keep in mind that snack time is very much a social time for children.  Please don’t be upset if the snack is not finished.  Your child may end up taking just a few sips of drink or bites of food and this is just fine.  It is a quiet time to nourish and socialize and to a young child, both are very important!

Birthday celebrations are welcomed as long as they are kept low key.  Feel free to bring in a “special snack” to share on that day.  I have found brownies or cookies are great.  Cake or cupcakes become a clean up nightmare!!  I have a special birthday card, a birthday crown and birthday badges that all students will receive in class.  If you choose to have a party outside of class, please try to pass out invitations after dismissal time.  This will eliminate children feeling excluded or having hurt feelings in the event you may be choosing just a few close friends to attend.

We will be having “Sharing Time” every Wednesday.  If your child does not attend school on sharing day, have him bring in something to share the next day he will be in school.  The children may choose to bring in something special or to just tell the group about something special going on in their lives.  Sharing is a great way for children to develop language and listening skills.  It also helps to form friendly bonds with their peers.

If your child will be attending school on Fridays, he/she will be participating in our Physical Education program at the Cape Ann YMCA.  We will be transported round trip by the Y van every Friday morning.  I will accompany the students on the van as well as remain with them throughout their entire visit.  Each child will need a towel, a swimsuit, and a plastic bag to place their wet items in after swim.  Please pack these items in the backpack as well as a small snack for that morning.  Children should come to school in their regular clothes and I will assist them with changing into their swimwear once we arrive at the Y.  This program is scheduled to begin on Friday, September 14th.

We will continue to offer our Afternoon Adventures program to all Pre-K students.  This is a wonderful opportunity for your children to be involved with our fun and engaging specialists and has been a tremendous success in the past.  The program will run Monday – Thursday from 12:00 – 3 p.m. with a different special offered each day.  The week of August 13th, I will be sending along an overview of the program and a sign up calendar for the month of September.  If you are interested in having your child attend, please complete the registration form and return it to school on your child’s first day. You may register for one, a few, or all of the days the program is offered.  A new calendar will be sent home the 25th of each month for the following month.  Please be prompt in returning your calendars as we will need an accurate head count for each day.

The last housekeeping note I have is in regards to safe footwear.  Please, please, please send your child to school wearing safe shoes.  Tie, buckle or velcro shoes/sneakers are great!  Clogs, fancy boots and party shoes pose a great safety issue when children are on the playground.  We try to have outdoor recess time every day (weather permitting).  Children this age are full of energy and love to use their large motor skills during outside playtime.  Clogs and other fancy shoes make it extremely difficult to run, climb, jump, etc.  I want to keep the children safe at all times therefore, this request in particular is extremely important.

We will begin the school year with an orientation day for our Pre-K students. In a separate email, you will be sent the date for your child to attend his/her orientation.  Kindergarten students begin school on Wednesday, September 5th.  School begins at 8:30 a.m. and dismissal is at 12:00 noon.  Parking is available on Farrington Ave. and we use the driveway next to the playground on Stewart Ave. to access the school building for foot travel only.  All cars must park on Farrington Ave or in the few parking spaces next to the playground. Please escort your child into the Pre-K/Kindergarten classroom at drop off.  This gives us the opportunity to touch base quickly each morning and also lets you as a parent know that your child has made it into the school safely.  For dismissal, please pick your child up on the playground at 12:00. On inclement weather days, children will be waiting in the foyer and will be dismissed by me from the door as each parent arrives for pick up.

I look forward to seeing you all the first week of school.  I feel honored and privileged that you have chosen to entrust many of your child’s learning experiences to us.  Pre-school and Kindergarten is a wonderfully inquisitive time for children to grow socially, emotionally and cognitively.  I know we will provide a comfortable, loving and caring environment to foster this growth and to allow your children to spread their wings and soar throughout the year!  I would like to leave you with just a quick rule that I have learned to teach by:

If you show a child something……….he watches.

If you tell a child something……….he listens,

But, if you have a child do what you are trying to show and tell……….he learns!!!

I look forward to seeing you all very soon!
